Tips for promoting happiness at work

by Joanna Konstantopoulou

Just about everyone recognises that happiness in the workplace is key to motivation and that it ultimately impacts the success of any business. What’s more, workplace happiness and contentment spills into personal lives, too. This is why human resources teams endeavour to increase workplace well-being via a variety of team interactions and environmental upgrades.

Some of the ways you can enhance personal or employee happiness at work are discussed below. These positive behavioural changes can promote workplace well-being and increase productivity.

Workplace behavioural change to promote happiness and well-being

Team working is one way to enhance the well-being and positivity of employees, as it often features employee recognition and/or rewards. One way for individuals to take charge within any workplace is to create a personalised, self rewards scheme. This means taking time to give yourself rewards when you know you’ve achieved your best results. The benefits gained can include enhanced workplace engagement and higher levels of enthusiasm.

Experts recognise that happiness at work is inextricably linked to job satisfaction. However, measuring and increasing job satisfaction in all the different types of workplace can be difficult for many professionals to quantify.

One key pointer for increasing job satisfaction is to enhance independence and personal responsibility.

Finally, increasing the amount of daily exercise taken in the workplace can boost well-being tremendously. Activity-based workplaces are increasingly popular within contemporary office designs, but it’s a simple matter to make time for ten to 15 minutes of gentle activity in any workplace. The benefits of workplace fitness activities can increase productivity, and will often spill over to employee lifestyle choices. It’s always been recognised that increased fitness can lead to greater happiness due to higher endorphin levels in the brain.
